nc tornadoes + paper inspiration

Happy Monday, friends! I hope you all had a nice weekend.

North Carolina suffered MAJOR damage on Saturday from severe storms and tornadoes. There are many people who lost loved ones, are injured and many still without power.

If you would like to help out, please visit the Triangle Red Cross homepage to donate. Funds raised will help feed and shelter those who are homeless and to rebuild the affected areas. Our neighbors could really use some positive vibes.

On a more positive note, while feeding my weekly Martha Weddings appetite, I came across some lovely wedding paper inspiration that I just had to share with you.

One - This non-traditional approach to wedding programs made my heart skip. Confetti? In your program?! Yes, please.

Two - Lace and doilies are often used in table settings, but I love how it was incorporated into the invitations. Who says an inner envelope has to be solid? Such a great detail!

Three - If you're planning to have guests sign a book, this could be a fun way to spice it up. Have your guests write on small cards and then insert them into their own special envelope.

Four - Placecard + personalized guest gift = genius! Each guest will receive their own single, personalized set of stationery.

Five - Most couples spend a good chunk of their budget on flowers, but what happens to all of those gorgeous buds after the reception? These printed bags are PERFECT to have guests pick their flowers as they leave.

Six - Shake up the ceremony programs by printing them in several different color schemes. Keeps in interesting, no?

Real Wedding: Neada + Brian

Hi there!

I've got a super special treat for y'all today. Eric's beautiful and lovely cousin, Neada, married the man of her dreams, Brian, last August in Washington DC. You might remember their adorable engagement photos? Yep, thought so. I've got all the goods to dish out to you about their big day, plus a little Persian Wedding Ceremony 101 for those not familiar with the traditions...

Neada and Brian covered a lot of bases in terms of marriage traditions. It began with a beautiful Catholic ceremony at Epiphany Catholic Church in Georgetown.

The bride wore Melissa Sweet lace gown and stunning (and sparkly!) Jimmy Choo peep-toes. I have shoe envy!

Brian and his groomsmen wore traditional formal tuxes with lily boutonnieres.

After the first ceremony, guests headed to the Four Seasons Hotel while the bridal party took pictures in the park.

After the cocktail hour, guests gathered at the Four Seasons for the Persian wedding ceremony, called the aghd sofreh. The ceremony portion is the aghd and the "spread" is the sofreh. Like most modern Iranian traditions do, the Persian ceremony has roots in Zoroastrian beliefs of the significance of nature and harvest, and literally places the bride and groom in the middle of these symbols. Each item on the sofreh has great significance and is there to play a particular role in sending the couple into their marriage.

Customs vary, but the most traditional items in the sofreh are a mirror (to bring light & brightness to their future), candelabras (to symbolize fire & energy), fruits (for a joyous future), sweets (to sweeten their life together), bread (prosperity for feasts throughout their life), a prayer rug, gold coins (for wealth and prosperity), fine silk (to symbolize family and tradition), eggs (to encourage fertility) and a Qur'an.

The sofreh is traditionally prepared by the women in the bride's family. Neada's mother, with the help of other family members, worked tirelessly to create this stunning spread:

Amazing, right? So much time and love went into this sofreh.

Brian and Neada were seated in front of the spread and the ceremony was beautiful!

In true tradition, Neada's bridesmaids held the ghand cloth (usually made of lace or silk) over the couple throughout the ceremony. The women switched off for this duty, as the ceremony can take some time and arms become weary.

The women and cousins in the family take turns churning the kalleh ghand (crystallized sugar) over the couple to bring sweetness and happiness to their lives. They also take turns sewing thread through the ghand cloth to "seal the lips of nay-sayers."

Then the couple is to feed honey to one another to seal in the "sweetness" of their life together. After the Persian ceremony, the reception party began in the grand ballroom...

The centerpieces were gorgeous, the music was fun and a great time was had by all! All of the reception flowers were done by Gala Events of Rockville, Maryland.

This red velvet masterpiece of a cake was created by the pastry chefs at the Four Seasons Hotel.

In DC fashion, each table was named after an American president.

Are they not the cutest?

And just when you thought they had rounded all of the bases, a little hora action was thrown in to honor Brian's mother who is Jewish. Such a melting-pot of a wedding, right? I love it!

It was a beautiful day for a beautiful couple. I was so honored to have been a guest to witness the love between these two and their gracious families.

Venue Spotlight: Top of the Hill

Happy Monday, friends! I hope you all had a fabulous weekend :) Today we're going to take a glance at a new space in town...

Chapel Hill is a hot location for weddings and there's a new kid on the venue block. Opening first as a restaurant, Top of the Hill recently added event space to their repertoire.

The Great Room at Top of the Hill is located at the heart of downtown Chapel Hill, perched above the Franklin Street and Columbia Street intersection. Building a rich tradition in the Carolina community, this space is and will continue to be an ideal venue for UNC students, alums and Chapel Hill natives alike. Here are a few facts about hosting an event in this space:

The space is broken up into four space options: The Great Room, The Tank Room, The Franklin Room and the entire facility.The Back Bar is also available for private rental (a more casual bar setting).
Seating for these spaces goes as follows:

The Great Room: 140 Seated, 200 Standing
The Tank Room: 40 Seated, 60 Standing
The Franklin Room: 40 Seated, 50 Standing
Everything: 220 Seated, 300 Standing
The "Seated" option is maximum, without buffet setup

Food: menus are available for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. They have several tiered seated dinner menus and a "limited Top of the Hill"menu option. You cannot provide an outside caterer.
Bev: Beer, wine and spirits are available. Beer is limited to house brewery options only.
Coordination: for weddings, they request that you provide your own event coordinator to serve as a point of contact for the restaurant/event space.
Linens: white tablecloths and black cloth napkins are provided.
Cake: You can provide your own cake, but there is a cake cutting fee of $2.00 per person.
Rehearsal fee: There will be a separate event fee should you need the space for any type of ceremony rehearsal.
Parking: Top of the Hill will validate the new Chapel Hill valet parking initiative. Thought parking is not guaranteed (with the exceptions of UNC Home Football days). Also, there is elevator access to the third floor space.

The earthquake and tsunamis have grabbed all of our attention. And now is the time to act. As most of you know, the blogosphere can be an amazing tool for helping those in need. Monday Sneak Peek :)

Hi, friends! Happy Monday to you :)

I hope you all had a restful and fun weekend! Grace Leisure Events kicked off the wedding season with a Duke Chapel ceremony and a Washington Duke reception. It was a beautiful day! The bride and groom were stunning and so happy! Here are a few photos I grabbed with my phone.

Hot pink, navy, green and white were the colors used throughout the event. Grace & the ladies at Tre Bella came up with the burlap/navy fabric to cover the vases on the cocktail tables. SO cute :)

The escort card table in the President's Gallery. The centerpiece, by Tre Bella, is stunning! (Sorry for the blurriness!)

Beautiful (and delicious!) five-tiered cake by Sugarland Bakery. Bottom three tiers were strawberry shortcake and the top two were mimosa. Icing was hand-piped onto each tier to match the lace on the bride's dress.

This wedding was a lot of fun and perfect to get back into the swing of the Wedding Season!

I'm VERY excited to share a beautiful, North Carolina wedding today! The very talented (and fellow Tar Heel alum) Lauren of Lauren Cowart Photography, captured Tiffany & Justin's big day on the Outer Banks coast. Check out all of this loveliness...

Here is a little bit from Lauren about shooting Tiffany & Justin's wedding:

"Most brides are the ones who need to be catered to, but shooting Tiffany and Justin's wedding was such a different experience. She kept asking everyone around her, "You good? You need anything?" She was asking even in the leading moments up to the ceremony. I think when two people are in love like Tiffany and Justin, there was an assuredness you could just feel! Their wedding on the northern beaches of Corolla was held right at sunset, with Rev. Shirley Anne of Carolina Wedding Co. officiating in the golden afternoon light. It was truly a perfect September day on the Outer Banks! "

Lauren helped me out by answering some questions about her business and life as a photographer:

How did you get into photography? / Give us a brief history of your company:

My mother is an ordained minister and performed her first wedding ceremony with me in her belly - So I'd say it's in my blood! I started shooting some of her small ceremonies on the Outer Banks during my summer vacations at home, and it quickly turned into a passion. Studying photojournalism at UNC-Chapel Hill helped cultivate my technical skills and from there, it's history!

What equipment do you shoot with?

I shoot with two Canon 5d cameras. My favorite lens is my 50mm, which I love to use in natural light to provide that soft ethereal effect.

What is your favorite moment to capture at a wedding?

I really love to shoot the bride and groom together just the two of them post-ceremony, but I always get misty during their first dance!! Like, it never fails.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to amateur wedding photographers?

Be confident! Shooting weddings can be so intimidating when you first start, but on the wedding day, everyone is so nervous and anxious. They don't' need a photographer who seems unsure on top of all the drama they are going to deal with. Show up ready to perform and always stay professional!

What location has been your favorite place to shoot so far?

This is a hard one - I love doing beach weddings but the refreshment of new locations is always exciting to me. When I shot in Charleston, SC, I was like a kid in a candy store! So much color and so much to see!

What advice do you give brides for portrait or wedding sessions?

I love candid photography over posed portraits, so I try to get my brides as relaxed as possible during shoots. I want their natural personalities to come through! I say just trust me, because you are going to look good, so stop worrying and just let loose! Be free.

Who is your favorite player on the 2010-2011 UNC Men's Basketball team & why?

Whooo!!! I can't pick just one - I have to give it to our freshmen players Kendall Marshall and Harrison Barnes - The excitement that overflows me after a sick assist from Marshall or a nasty dunk by Barnes might be somewhat scary to the average person. I am just so proud to see these two young things stepping up and really uniting our Tar Heel team!! GO HEELS!

tuxedo guide: lapels

There are few times when I will actually agree with ZZ Top and their hit song "Sharp Dressed Man" hits the nail right on the head. Nothing beats a handsome man in a nicely tailored suit. Nothing. There, I said it! Nowadays, with business casual days at the office and jeans becoming more and more acceptable, I'm finding a SERIOUS lack of sharply dressed men walking around. Not okay. Which is why I LOVE attending evening and/or formal weddings. It is one of the rare opportunities to see younger, older and even kiddos strutting their stuff in a nice coat and tie! Ring bearers in tuxes? I cannot get enough - seriously.

With a younger generation beginning to venture into the world of wedded bliss, some tuxedo guidance for the grooms seems to be necessary! No, I'm not Giorgio Armani or Michael Kors - we're covering basics today, people.

To begin this series we're going to start with lapels (you know that collar-ish thingy on the front-side of your jacket). Right, so there are a few different styles to choose from:

This is a classic notch lapel. You'll find this on most tuxedos, blazers and suit jackets. You find these on one and two-button, single-breasted suits. If you're looking for a classic, medium-formal style, this is your "go-to!"

The peak lapel forms a "V" shape pointing the shoulders. The shape can have a slimming affect for the waist and a broadening affect for the shoulders. Peak lapels are often found on double-breasted suit jackets and most single and double-breasted dinner jackets. This is considered the most formal version of a tux lapel and is often paired with tails.

The shawl lapel was very fashionable in the 1970s and 1980s. With a smooth shape, it is considered somewhat less formal. Though Daniel Craig does NO wrong and looks smashing at the 2009 Oscars in his shawl-style tuxedo. Right, ladies? See I knew I could draw you back in...

TGIF, friends! I've got a special treat for you today :) This Friday marks {flower & honey}'s first ever, blog swap! The awesome Victoria, from Tickle My Fancy, is visiting today to chat about destination weddings!

"Aloha, Flower & Honey readers!

Victoria here from TickleMyFancy and I am so honored and excited to be sharing some of my insight on planning a destination wedding!

My Hawaii wedding is fast approaching, and here are a few things I've gathered along the way.

Once you have the date and location set, send your save the dates immediately. The sooner the better, the guests you plan on inviting need plenty of time to be able to take off work and make travel arrangements. As far as the invites, typically it's suggested you send those out for destination weddings between eight to ten weeks before. In my case our "save the dates" were our invites, since ours will be a very low key, very intimate small ceremony on the beautiful island of Kauai.

I can't stress to you enough about how crucial it is that you find a planner where your wedding will be held. Especially if your location isn't a short drive away. Your planner will become a best friend so to speak in the whole process so definitely make sure you do lots of research. Pick one that sees your vision, and who you will be able to get along with. Emails and phone calls will be the source of communication since you can't physically be there whenever you want. When corresponding with your planner, keep in mind the time difference. Whether it's the same timezone or five, this can of course mean you won't get replies/responses as soon as you would like, so be patient.

If the guests replied to your invite with a YES, the least you can do is give them recommendations or steer them in the right direction. Along with the invite you can make very cute little maps of the city, or print off hotel lists, things to do, time lines of planned events i.e. rehearsal dinner, welcome party, etc. There are so many creative and fun ways to do this, the Internet and of course magazines are great sources. Basically you want the guests to just show up and enjoy themselves, so the less they have to do the better.

Planning from afar is a huge task and can get very stressful. I suggest just one thing, remember the main and most important reason you are doing it all, your best friend and soon to be spouse. :)

Oscars 2011 - Best & Worst

Hi loves! Hope you all had a fabulous weekend! Mine consisted of wonderful NC weather, time with a great friend and of course, the Oscars! Who watched? I thought Anne & James were an interesting combo. Though someone needed to show James how to read the teleprompter without looking confused. I thought Miss Hathaway did a great job! LOVE her.

But of course, the fun part is the red carpet! I kind of went a little Joan Rivers this year and decided to share my picks for best and worst dressed of the night.

Let's start with the downside first...

I think Marisa's dress felt off to me because of the fabric catching in all of the wrong places. The shape doesn't bother me, but I couldn't stop staring at her hips. No, thank you. The structure of Nicole's dress is very cool, but I found the beading to be super distracting, plus her orange pumps kept taking my eyes off her dress and straight to the floor. Not a big fan...

Okay, on to my favorites!

These two could do no wrong this year! Mila's Elie Saab number fits her personality and the lilac was perfect for her complexion. There are so many details to this dress and I'm in love with it! You can find the Elie Saab bridal line (in all of its lacy and romantic goodness) here. Dame Helen Mirren was fabulous per usual. This dress was timeless, just like her. And her bit with fellow-presenter, Russell Brand, was quite hilarious.

Kind of sad my pick for Best Picture didn't win, but from what I hear The King's Speech is the bees knees. Will have to check that out for sure! What are you thoughts? Share your favorites (or not-so-favorites) in the comments!

TGIF to you! I'm off to the beach for a zen weekend with one of my besties - psyched! It will involve a lot of things including watching the Academy Awards on Sunday night. SMP feature for GLE/Kellie Kano!

I've mentioned this wedding before, but this morning I must bring it up again because this is so special. My heart leapt today, LEAPT, out of my chest when I saw that my mentor, Grace Beason, was on Style Me Pretty! The featured wedding was captured by the amazing Kellie Kano (she's wonderful - you MUST check out her work!). I mean just look at these images, well you can stare if you'd like...

Matt & Elizabeth are such a special couple. The personal touches on this wedding were sublime to the occasion. Elizabeth's mom, Jenny, worked tirelessly on decor and flowers, Elizabeth's sisters helped with the stationery and photobooth. Every time you turned around the family was pitching in to make the day special for those two lovebirds. I was so excited to be there with Grace and help the day unfold.

*Sidenote*, all wedding vendors can attest to the fact that when your work shows up on SMP, you do a lil' happy dance. Well, maybe a big, jump-for-joy, hallelujah dance. But a jig nonetheless. So BIG congrats to Grace Leisure Events and Kellie Kano for your hard work and this awesomesauce feature!

Hi y'all! Hope everyone is having a fabulous day, just like the bride above :) You know, the silly-smile-on-your-face, jump-on-the-bed kind of day? Yea, love those!

I got a fun email the other day from a friend that suggested such a neat idea! So I naturally decided to post about it...

My to-be-wed friend is on the hunt for a previously-owned veil to use as her "something borrowed" item. When I first read it, I thought to myself "hmmm, I feel like I would want my own veil." But then I realized, how wonderful to be able to find a beautiful item that will be a great part of your special day? And the previous owner now has an even more wonderful connection to the wedding! The more I think about this idea, the more I absolutely adore it!

So, let's hear it! Who has done this before? OR have you borrowed a different item in a similar fashion? I'd love to know if this is me showing late to a totally awesome party, or if this train is just leaving the station.

Welcome back from the holiday rush! I know, I know, we're not out of the woods yet with New Years Eve just around the corner! Therefore, I feel confident in continuing posts about holiday treats ;)

I have a HUGE sweet-tooth and I completely indulged this past weekend (slash week). Pumpkin pie, cookies, fudge, Momma's mincemeat fruitcake...the list goes on! However, I didn't get TOO creative. My sister gave me Bakerella's book Cake Pops for Christmas and this is my next big adventure!

Perfectly Placed: Table Settings

Being a guest at a wedding, or any party for that matter, should be an experience! I love it when brides and grooms go the extra mile to provide surprises around every corner for their friends and families. These surprises can be done in a million different ways. One of my favorites happens to be place settings.

Layered ceramic, beautiful cloth napkins, twinkling crystal glasses and a perfectly placed menu card can be a nice surprise for a guest when they take their seat. Here are a few lovely examples I've come across...

Hi lovelies! I cannot believe it's already Wednesday! This week has completely flown by. We've got crazy rain going on here on the east coast and in attempt to stay positive on such a dreary day, I'm going with the idea that this monsoon is the gateway to autumn(one of my favorite seasons!) - yippee!

This past weekend in Chapel Hill was fabulous! I know I promised some photos from the farm wedding, but lazy me has not dumped them off the digital to my laptop. But fear not! The bride & groom chose to do a "first look" prior to the ceremony. I'm loving this trend so much! Pluses? Makes the first time the bride and groom see each other all the more intimate, pictures between ceremony and the reception go much quicker so the bridal party and guests have more time to partaaay, AND the look on the bride and grooms' faces are always priceless. What's not to love?

I'll work on getting some of my shots posted soon. In the meantime, get out your wellies & stay dry!

There are countless details that go into designing an event. I've found that one major detail that often times gets ignored or not taken seriously enough is lighting. Sometimes lighting can make or break an event because of the impact it has on the space. This can include mood, the photography and even the most basic idea of having guests be able to see where they're walking! Often times, outdoor and evening weddings are guilty of not providing enough or proper lighting.

These days you find fabulous sources of light from lanterns to chandeliers! One style that I have fallen particularly hard for is white string lights. Let's nip this in the bud: please put all preconceived notions about string lights out of your head and I'll spare you my awful Clark Griswold jokes. Deal? Deal. But because I love you, here's a nugget of fun!

Back to the point. White string lights are a fun and inexpensive way to add some glowing romance to an evening event. Whether you're in a lofty barn, a big white tent or at a backyard get-together, twinkling lights offer a warm and inviting vibe to the evening. Not to mention it offers lovely eye-candy for photographers. Check out these gems:

One of my regular reads these days is the blog of dessert guru, Amy Atlas, called Sweet Designs. Whether this is to satisfy my sweet tooth cravings without the calories or just all of the eye-candy, I'm not sure. Regardless, you should check her out!

Many brides & grooms today are opting to offer more than just cake at their receptions. Guest dessert tables and/or candy tables are HUGE trend right now. Amy does fabulous designs herself and she also features dessert designs from submitted entries. Submissions range in types of events, but many fall into the wedding category.

Split Rock Farm

Adrienne & Devin exchanged vows this past weekend in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The party continued on with a tented reception on the beautiful Split Rock farm in Hillsborough. We worked with some amazing vendors who made this gathering one to remember. Here are a few sneak peeks of the reception:

Adrienne & Devin met at a champagne tasting at A Southern Season, hence the champagne theme throughout the event.

The Catering Company of Chapel Hill & Fern Rock Farm did a fabulous job with the table settings.

The glowing lanterns added a nice summer touch.

It was a fun and energized celebration! Grace and I were excited to be a part of it!

Fancy Feet: 5 Tips for Wedding Shoes

A lot of women (and some men) take much pride in knowing the exact number of pairs of shoes that reside in their closet. I am not one of those people. I know that if I counted out that number, it would bring me back to reality and eventually I would guilt myself into taking half of them to Goodwill. Point being, "Hi, everyone. My name is Katherine and I'm a shoe addict."

Addiction and (partial) kidding aside, today's post is about bringing together two of my very favorite things: shoes & weddings!

Choosing the perfect pair for your wedding probably seems simple and it can be. Though there are some key points to keep in mind while on the hunt!

Stick to Your Style: Don't feel obliged to go out and buy the first creme, satin slingback you find. If you're getting hitched on a beautiful farm in the mountains, throw on some cowgirl boots. If you're fairly tall, do not hesitate to go the sparkly, ballerina flat route. Beach wedding? Open-toed sandals, flip-flops or maybe none at all! If you're traditional, that satin slingback may be perfect for you. *Try to stay open-minded for your beau/partner - lots of grooms and groomsmen are rocking the Chuck Taylor All-Stars these days and trust me, it's adorable and they'll thank you over and over and over...
Don't Sacrifice Style for Comfort: You should always take comfort into major consideration, as you will be on your feet for most of the wedding day. I know it may seem daunting, but it IS possible to find a beautiful shoe that won't kill your feet. Be patient - they are out there! *Ask friends or family if they have a particular brand they would recommend.
Have a Back-Up Plan: If you don't care to take comfort into consideration, have a plan B. You WILL, without fail, begin to regret this decision sometime during the reception (if not sooner). Grab your favorite flip-flops or purchase a comfy pair of kitten-heels to slip on later. Then pat yourself on the back for planning ahead!
Break 'Em In: If you are purchasing brand new shoes for the big day, break them in. Four days in advance should do the trick. If you plan on using inserts, break in the shoes WITH the inserts. *Choose wisely when you do this - don't want to ruin them. Also, I recommend the groom break in his shoes too.
Take Shoes to Your Fitting: Height is the biggest factor here. You will want the length of your dress to be proportioned to how tall you will be when walking down the aisle.

I have several friends that are at that pivotal stage of their wedding planning: finding THE dress. I've heard it can be a wonderful, easy choice - some even go with the very first dress they try on! I've also heard the other side in that it can be overwhelming, tiring and frustrating, taking store, after boutique, after shop to find the perfect look. I suppose it's all about the journey and no bride walks down the aisle feeling like they chose the wrong dress...

Jinsey Dauk, of The Knot {dot} com, put together a rockin' list of 15 Tips for Gown Shopping. A few of my favorites include:

Wearing nude, skin-tone colored undergarments to your fittings, to be sure of fit and if you can see through the fabric. No peep shows, please!
Know your budget going into the shop. Factor in cost of veil, headpiece, shoes, lingerie and jewelry.
Trust your instincts - you will know when it's the right dress!

I'll admit it. I have a major sweet tooth! And what could be better than combining something so delectable with beautiful design? Wedding cakes are such a fun (and delicious) part of the big day. And feeding into my own modern design taste, bakers are becoming more and more daring with their designs.

I find myself leaning toward square instead of round, clean lines and incorporating floral design into the cake. Flavors? I swoon for red velvet, vanilla/chocolate marble and yellow cake. And only one icing has the key to my culinary heart - buttercream! What type of cake tickles your taste buds?

There are countless elements of weddings that get my wheels spinning or tug on my heartstrings. After working in stationery and then venturing into the planning world, I still find myself grinning ear-to-ear when I see a fantastic invitation or save-the-date! Letterpress, engraved, flat - you name it and I love it. I have a great fondness for graphic design. Pair this with my love for weddings and well, you get the picture...

To honor this particular obsession of mine, here are a few modern-style invites I've recently found on Minted! Love, love love these - enjoy :)

Square designs are becoming more and more popular.
If you can bite the bullet on the extra postage, it's worth it!
Yellow, black and charcoal are popular color combos for evening and fall weddings.

flowers at the Inn...

Flowers have a whimsical way of pulling a reception together. Whether you're in a grand ballroom, a tent or an outdoor space, the thread that often pulls it all together are the floral arrangements. Elizabeth Wahl & Jake Appelbaum did a great job, with the help of Watered Garden Florists, choosing color and texture for their ballroom reception. Here are a few photos of the Hill Ballroom:

The lilies gave every-other centerpiece wonderful height and drew your eye up to the impressive chandeliers and intricate molding on the ceiling.

The spring colors were highlighted well with the set lighting and the chandeliers' warm light.

I had an amazing time coordinating Elizabeth Wahl & Jake Appelbaum's May 30th wedding in Durham/Chapel Hill. The ceremony was at Beth El Synagogue in Durham and the reception was at The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill.

Early in my not-so-lengthy experience in the wedding industry, cinematography always left me feeling uneasy. You just never know how something like a video of your wedding will turn out. However the more I have been exposed to cinematography, the more I absolutely adore the concept!

I have come to realize, if done well, how special having video of that special day can truly be. I am especially drawn to the super 8 mm film. The unfinished, vintage feel to these videos gives you a intimate connection to the couple. And the way 8 mm reacts to natural light is priceless.

Here is a sweet film by Joel Serrato, a cinematographer in Santa Barbara, California. He captured the essence of Ainjil and Chris's vineyard wedding.

NACE is the National Association for Catering Executives and the Triangle has their own chapter. The Triangle chapter celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008 and is made up of the best caterers, photographers, venue specialists, bakers, planners, etc. in the area. They celebrate the year with the Golden Whisk Awards Gala, which was held at the lavish Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary.

My mentor and boss, Grace, submitted a full-service wedding she helped design and we coordinated in September. By vote of her peers in the industry and NACE members, the Florio/Boggs wedding won Best Wedding of 2009! Here are a few photos of the wedding by Rachel Garrison of Tamara Lackey Photography and a link to Grace's blog entry...

a giggle always helps

As I am sure you well know, weddings can be very stressful. But I learned this weekend that laughter can take you a very long way. The reception of Jessica & Shai's wedding was at the Nasher Museum of Art on Duke's campus. It was a beautiful set up with asian and other eastern flair. With the set up having to occur in a very small window of time (one hour and fifteen minutes to be exact) stress levels for all parties were certainly on high.

After the guests began to arrive and all was running smoothly, the wedding party was introduced. In true Chinese tradition (the bride wanted to keep to her roots), they played a game with the groom and his groomsmen. Each bridesmaid had the opportunity to ask the groom a question or give him a task to prove how well he knew his new wife. In good humor the groom obliged and participated. Everyone in the room (guests, bridal party, family and vendors/contractors) were almost in tears with the groom and his performance...

Here are a few of the questions/tasks the groom was given:

"What is the anniversary date of your engagement?"

"Give us three nicknames that you call your wife..."

"What is your wife's favorite quote from your now mother-in-law?" (His answer was, "No, that's just not going to work..." And he ended up being right!)

Then, he was blindfolded and by touch, had to find his wife's hands out of all the bridesmaids' hands. (One of the groomsmen jumped in too just to confuse him a bit, but he was not fooled...)

The finale was to see how many push-ups he and his groomsmen could complete...let's just say then didn't get very far. In their defense they did say they were saving their energy for the dancefloor...

My point is, in between the stresses of your wedding day, do not forget the point of all of it: happiness. And there is nothing closer to happiness than a little laughter. Jessica and Shai's wedding was full of happiness & laughter - as should everyday :)

Event Profile: Melissa & John

One of my dearest childhood friends, and essentially my other older brother, John Cerqueira married the love of his life, Melissa Ervin on April 18, 2009 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Not only did they have a beautiful ceremony and rockin' reception, but the entire wedding weekend was one for the books. So I have decided to profile the weekend they exchanged "I do's" and became Mr. and Mrs.

The weekend began with the Bridesmaids Luncheon on Friday afternoon at GAKS Coffee House & Tea Room in Raleigh. You can find it in the Sunset Hills neighborhood on Medlin Road. Sally Finch and her daughter Karrica served up a lovely traditional afternoon tea with a GAKS twist here and there. They served an assortment of berry scones with cream. Traditional English Breakfast loose leaf tea and some other fun flavored teas like Pina Colada! Mmmm. For lunch they served chicken and tuna sandwiches with salad and homemade vinaigrette.

The room they served us in was a private tea room that was decorated with any type of tea pot you could imagine. I felt like I was at Alice's very merry unbirthday party! :) (I apologize for the shameless Disney reference). The room was beautiful and it was a perfect time for Melissa to spend some quality time with her bridesmaids, mother, grandmother and future mother-in-law.

The next time I saw the blushing bride was for the rehearsal of the ceremony later that day. John & Melissa decided on a beautiful church, Sacred Heart Cathedral on Hillsborough Street in downtown Raleigh. Embedded in the core of downtown, this church has a magical charm to it. Like most Catholic churches, the inside (from floor to ceiling) was incredibly ornate and beautiful: the perfect setting for John & Melissa to exchange vows. And they had the most fun reverend running the show! Once everyone sorted where they were standing and who was saying what, everyone made their way to the rehearsal dinner.

All I can say is John & Melissa have GREAT taste in food. They chose to have their rehearsal dinner at Sitti, an authentic lebanese restaurant on S. Wilmington Street, a few blocks from the church. They provided their private cellar for the occasion. "Sitti" is the lebanese word for grandmother, the most important person in a middle-eastern family. According to the owners, the restaurant is meant to evoke the feel of family and togetherness. The large U-shape set up for the table did just that. Tapas-style portions of authentic lebanese dishes were served, including the best hummus I've ever tasted in my life. The rehearsal dinner was certainly a perfect way for the people in John & Melissa's lives to meet and become one large family. Bravo on this pick guys! Post-rehearsal dinner, some brave souls continued the party at the Busy Bee (which has a phenomenal deck connected to the upstairs hot-spot "The Hive") into the wee hours of the morning. Others, probably the more sensible guests, headed home to catch some Zs for the big day!

John & Melissa's wedding day could not have been more beautiful. 72 degrees and Carolina-blue skies painted the perfect setting. Their ceremony was simple and very elegant. They chose a classic color scheme of black, white and shades of fuchsia. The bridesmaids wore black simple, strapless, tea-length dresses. Melissa, as usual, was absolutely stunning in her strapless, beaded gown. The sweet-heart neckline and hour-glass shaping was perfect. She said it weighed about 30 pounds, but Melissa - it was well worth it! Melissa found the dress at the Bridal Boutique on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh. "I love the girls I worked with at that particular shop," she said. "When I went for my fittings, the owner wasn't quite as personable or as fun to work with. But all in all, I was happy with my dress, so that was all that was important to me." (Above: Melissa and two of her bridesmaids, day-of the wedding)

Melissa and her bridesmaids carried hydrangeas, peonies, calas, roses and snap dragons - stunning colors against the black and white attire. Melissa chose Dogwood Tree Floral Designs as her florist, working closely with Mel Day. "His pricing was well within budget, he offered free delivery to our downtown locations and was available whenever I needed to meet with him." Sounds like every brides dream vendor. After the ceremony, a major photo session began with Curtis Brown Photography. "They are very creative, which was what we were really looking for in a photographer. They were not scared to go off the beaten path with new ideas for photos...they had a lot of energy and excitement in shooting..." Melissa said. With a few hours to spare, John & Melissa were whisked away on a rickshaw around downtown Raleigh for a bit and then off to a cocktail hour (or two) at The Busy Bee. "That was so fun, riding around in our wedding attire, just being outside and taking everything in," Melissa said. "It was a nice touch." (Above: J&M riding off to the Busy Bee)

After a few drinks at The Hive, everyone headed to the reception. They chose to have their reception at the Marbles Kids Museum. "John actually found Marbles, but after doing one walk through with him, I agreed. It was so open, spacious and a perfect location. We wanted everything to be downtown." In just the forum area of the museum, there was enough space for the dance floor, two bars, about 18 round tables, the cake table and the buffet. "Also, we really liked working with the coordinator, Kelli Harrison. She was so nice and easy to work with."

John & Melissa both have wonderful senses of humor and a young, vibrant outlook on life. Marbles was a perfect reflection of their adventurous nature and ability to have fun anywhere! The bridal party took photos in the upstairs "peas and carrots" ball pit for an awesomely unique photo session!

The bride and groom also chose to serve cupcakes & candy versus a traditional wedding cake. The cupcakes were provided by The Cupcake Shoppe on Glenwood Avenue. They worked closely with owner Sara Coleman. "Sara gets 100 stars! She is amazing to work with, responsive to all questions, prompt with delivery and the cupcakes were honestly the best I have ever had." Melissa said Sara went out of her way to make a particular flavor, usually only available in the winter, specifically for their wedding cupcake menu. Don't you love it when vendors go out of their way to make you feel special?

Melissa added an extra touch with a candy bar! Mismatch jars decorated with ribbon and filled with rock candy, chocolates and generally anything sweet made the perfect favor for the guests as they left the reception. And it all fell into the color scheme they chose with shades of pink and black.

Keeping with the tasty treats, the buffet was made up of a delicious collection from Caffe Luna, another fabulous downtown Raleigh eatery. "We have a friend that has used them to cater their wedding and we were impressed by the job they did. Also, we have been eating at Caffe Luna since college and have always enjoyed their food," Melissa said. "My favorites were the pastas, the sliced sausages and of course the cheese selection. I heard a lot of compliments on the mushroom dishes too!"

Overall, this weekend was amazing! Melissa & John gave such attention to detail with each aspect of the weekend. And I believe they managed to have the time of their lives while doing so - which is really tough to do! They truly opened my eyes to downtown Raleigh and all it has to offer. They also worked with some very cool vendors! Kudos to John & Melissa for a great wedding weekend! I'm so happy they found one another and wish them a lifetime of happiness!

Bay 7

I'm not sure there's anything I'm more anxious to experience than helping out with a reception at Bay 7. While living in Chicago, all I heard about from my Durham natives was how awesome American Tobacco is and how much Bay 7 rocks! Accommodating up to 400 people, this urban-chic warehouse is perfect for almost any occasion!

After the Ben Folds show at the Durham Performing Arts Center this year, I peeked into a Bay 7 window to check it out and there was a Sweet 16 birthday party going on! If you're planning a large reception in the Triangle, Bay 7 is certainly worth your time!

saved by grace

After graduation in May 2008, I moved to Chicago for the summer to work for a public relations firm. Chicago was amazing and my job was very challenging. After the economy took a deep drop in late July, the company went on a hiring freeze. While I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Windy City, I decided I missed my family, my friends and the South in general too much to keep me in the Midwest. I moved back to North Carolina in mid-August.

Before I even packed up my apartment in Chicago, I was reaching out to PR agencies and event planners in North Carolina. One of many long telephone conversations with my mom, lead to my discovery of Grace Beason. I knew the last name because I grew up with her two sister-in-laws. My best gal pals from elementary school had an older brother, and in turn married Grace Leisure Peck. I checked out Grace's web site and was blown away at her experience.

After I settled in to North Carolina, Grace and I got together! Fate would have it that she was looking for some extra help. Since then she has been my mentor in the event planning field.

In December, Grace has an extravagant event planned for a wedding in High Point, NC. As Grace likes to say, she was "if you want to learn to swim, I'll throw you in the deep end!" While she knew that a 500+ wedding wasn't the easiest way to start my wedding planning experience, I couldn't have learned more from it! It was fast-paced, demanding and amazing!

In short, I got to know Grace very quickly as we spent an entire weekend together! I learned so much from her and her other assistant Lindsey. Soaking in all the information the vendors required, how many miniature meetings it took the day before, and all the small organizational efforts it took to make everything become seamless - was mind blowing. I called my mom on my drive back to Durham on Sunday afternoon and told her how much fun I had.

I was so thankful that Grace put faith in me to help her with such a big undertaking. And ever since, I've been excited to see more of her events! Now, I'm learning the ropes between full-service coordinating and day-of coordinating. I'm learning good and bad vendors in town and around the state. I'm learning timing of contracts and when specific aspects of the plan should be nailed down. I'm learning more than I ever thought possible, and this is just the beginning of my time with Grace. Grace has a bundle of weddings in the coming year that she has asked me to help with! YAY!

Grace, her husband Matt and their adorable dog JP are wonderful! I'm so excited to get to know all of them better and the wedding industry of course :) It will be a fun ride!

Just the beginning

Weddings can be a magical event where two people, two families join together all because of love. Weddings can also be a major headache for those who are planning it. Which is why I have created this lovely outlet to record my experiences with weddings, and other events! Hopefully it will become a do and don't list for those directly involved in planning such a wonderful occasion. And a fun way for people to find cool tips, fun venues & awesome vendors! I'm going to do my best to post pictures and provide web links so my readers can get the full, wedding effect!

A few items to keep in mind: I am not a professional wedding planner. I am apprenticing with an amazing professional planner which you will certainly read more about later! Also, I am not a bride; at least not yet. While I have been around several weddings of personal friends and family, I have never been directly in charge of my own or anyone else's wedding (hopefully someday! but not yet). In short, my entries will result from my experience with going to weddings, being in weddings or working weddings.

As crazy as weddings can be to plan, as many "Bridezillas" as there are running around, there is one certain thing about the madness. Weddings are a celebration of life and love. This core idea has inspired me for the title of my blog: Life is a flower, love is the honey. Vick said it best...
